Locksmiths - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I didn't receive a letter asking me to renew my SCEC Approval.

Many letters were returned not known at given address; yours may have been one of these letters. If you would like to remain in the scheme an application form can be downloaded from here

Q: What do I need to provide with my application?

Applications require the applicant to provide certified copies of:

  •          Security license
  •          If applicable – letter from your Employer
  •          Names and contact details for your character references
  •          Passport size photo
  •          Expired SCEC ID card if applicable.

Q: Where do I find the form for the police check?

Access the AFP website complete and submit to the AFP. Send the response with your documentation.

Yes. A certified copy of a check done in the past three months is also acceptable.

Q: Do I need a finger prints?

No.

Q: I have been a locksmith for many years, do I really have to do this?

If you wish to remain in the SCEC Approved Locksmith Scheme – yes.

Q: Do I need to send my ID card back with the application?

Only if you do not intend to remain in the Locksmith Scheme or it is expired.

Q: My card has/is about to expire, what do I do?

If you intend to remain in the Locksmith Scheme, ensure your application is received by 15 November 2011. Send an email (to t4ps@t4.gov.au) Attention Maxine, requesting an interim card. Include a current passport like (head and shoulders with white, plain background) photo in jpeg format with your Date of Birth and Place of Birth.

Q: Criterion 2 states I require trade qualification, however after many years in the industry and I have not got one.

The pathway for a locksmith to gain a qualification varies person to person, SCEC cannot provide any advice on the best path for an individual. There are two main options, a Tradesperson Rights Certificate through Trades Recognition Australia or a Certificate III via Recognition of Prior Learning through a TAFE Institute.  Q: I don’t think I can make the deadline of 15 November 2011.

In November send in what documentation you have, with a letter requesting an extension. In the letter asking for an extension give an estimate of when you will be able to provide all the documentation.

Q: I have sent in my documentation by 15 November 2011.What happens now?

Your application will be processed to ensure it is complete; you will receive a letter advising the outcome. The letter will also provide further information on dates and proposed venues for the 2012 Locksmith Briefing sessions. Depending on numbers briefing sessions will be offered in locations around Australia.

You will be able to nominate for a briefing session at a venue that is suitable for you. If minimum number of participants is received for that venue, you will receive confirmation and joining instructions approximately one month prior to the briefing session. Venues and dates will also be advertised on this website. If you are unable to attend when the briefing session is at a nearby venue, you will have the opportunity to attend a briefing session in Canberra.

Q: If I do not send in any documentation by 15 November 2011, what happens then?

If there is no response from Locksmiths by 15 November 2011, they will be removed from the SCEC Approved Locksmiths Scheme and their SCEC ID card cancelled. Locksmiths in this category will be sent a letter confirming their removal from the scheme and requesting the return of the SCEC ID card.
